Eligibility for the Performance Competition

  1. Students age 6 through high school eligible to compete.

  2. The competition will be divided into FOUR age Groups:
    Elementary, intermediate, junior, and high school.
    Three winners will be chosen from each level.

  3. Students in the elementary and intermediate divisions will
    perform two contrasting pieces from the 20th or 21st centuries.

  4. Students in the junior and high school divisions will perform
    one piece from the 20th or 21st centuries.

Prizes for the performance competition

Elementary Division: (1st through 4th grade)
First Place — $50.00 cash
Second Place — $20.00 cash
Third Place — $15.00 cash

Intermediate Division: (5th and 6th grade)
First Place — $75.00 cash
Second Place — $50.00 cash
Third Place — $30.00 cash

Junior Division: (7th, 8th, and 9th grade)
First Place — $100.00 cash
Second Place — $75.00 cash
Third Place — $50.00 cash

High School Division: (10th, 11th, and 12th grade)
First Place — $100.00 cash
Second Place — $75.00 cash
Third Place — $50.00 cash

Winner’s Recital
Saturday, April 26, 2008, 7:00 pm in the Louis Armstrong Theatre. Absolutely no prizes will be given to winners who cannot perform at this recital (prizes will be given at this time).

  • Elementary Division: (1st – 4th grade)
    Saturday, April 26, 10:00-4:00 pm., PAC 1228

  • Intermediate Division: (5th and 6th grade)
    Saturday, April 26, 10:00-4:00 pm., PAC 1227

  • Junior Division: (7th, 8th, and 9th grade)
    Saturday, April 26, 10:00-4:00 pm., Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall

  • High School Division: (10th, 11th and 12th grade)
    Saturday, April 26, 10:00-4:00 pm., PAC, Louis Armstrong Theatre

  • All performances are open to the Public

 
Application Procedure

  • Each participant in the elementary and intermediate division must perform two 20th / 21st century pieces of contrasting styles. At least one of the two works must be memorized. A student may elect to play two contrasting pieces by the same composer as well. Each participant in the junior and senior division must perform one 20th / 21st century piece.

Time Limit for Repertoire

  • Elementary Division (1st – 4th grade): 6 minutes

  • Intermediate Division (5th and 6th grade): 10 minutes

  • Junior Division (7th, 8th, and 9th grade): 12 minutes

  • High School Division (10th, 11th, and 12th grade): 12 minutes

Details

  • All applications will be processed in the order received. The Competition board
    reserves the right to limit the number of contestants to 20 applicants in each category.

  • All participants will receive an evaluation of their performance by both judges.
    The evaluations will be sent to the teacher.

  • The decisions of the judges are final.

  • Students should bring one copy of the music for the judges
    with measures numbered (no photo-copies).

  • Winners will be chosen after the competition is over on
    Saturday, April 26, and will be called immediately.
